Song-a-day: Killer Mike – Big Beast

Song-a-day: Killer Mike – Big Beast

I’ll be the first to admit I know pretty much nothing about current rap music. When it comes to some old school 90’s beats, I know a pinch more, but still. Dre and Snoop are great, but how often do they really get action on my iPod? Pretty rarely. So, I’m making it somewhat of a goal to expand my iPod’s over-played genres, and why not start with this track?

Killer Mike’s new single off his forth-coming release with producer EL-P, R.A.P. Music (Rebellious African People’s Music), is a testament to great lyricism. “Big Beast” is angry (good rap music should be, right?), but about more things than just sloppy bitches and expensive grills. Ok, maybe I’m starting to sound like a grandma, but this song is SO much more interesting than crappy rap that does complain about those types of things.

This dude is not only well read, but also extremely personable and literate in interviews and features (also a political activist) marking this as one of the first rap songs of the year to make it to my iPod. It’s a good feeling when the artist making the music you like…actually warrants being liked as a human, not just an artist. I’m looking at your giant head, Kayne.

Stream the single below and stay tuned for the full-length release out May 15th! And for those out there who do know rap, throw another decent song my way…think of it as a community service act, cleaning up one rap newbie at a time.

Video: The Shins – A Simple Song

My record player has been burning up the Shins’ past stint, Wincing the Night Away, in excited preparation for their upcoming release, Port of Morrow. Adding fuel to this Shins lover’s fire, a new video was just set loose onto the interwebs yesterday as a music video for the album’s single, “Simple Song.” A decent musical display of what’s to come, the video adds a certain sense of nostalgia mixed with irony mixed with, well, tongue-in-cheek humor. The music video open’s with a dead James Mercer (who seems to be channeling a little bit of a Kevin Spacey circa American Beauty vibe) reading his last will and testament via (you guessed it) this song.

The whole thing is a little morbid, especially as he tells his three children (played by the backup band members) that to decide who will inherit the house, they must search the home for the deed. He then proceeds to tell them (after they find it, of course) that it’s a joke and out of nowhere, a giant crane comes in and takes the whole place down. Like we said. a little morbid and a little tongue-in-cheek: the perfect visual accompaniment for the Shins’ new single.

Stay tuned for your chance at their new musical madness Port of Morrow, out March 20th (via Columbia and James Mercer’s own Aural Apothecary). Until then download this video from iTunes for free. Duh.

Song-A-Day: Yellow Ostrich – Marathon Runner

**Check out my original post on this uber kewl blog: The Neighborhood!

If you’re like most individuals, you’ve never seen a yellow Ostrich in person. If I had to imagine Yellow Ostrich as an animal incarnate, it would have to be—perhaps you guessed it—some kind of muscular, yellow, three-headed beast placed on earth to melt minds through awesome music. Come to think of it, that describes this band to a T.

Yellow Ostrich is comprised of wunderkind Alex Schaaf, multi-instrumentalist, Jon Natchez, and drummer, Michael Tapper, although previous compositions were solely played and produced by Schaaf as a solo project. The band just announced the pending release of their new full-length Strange Land, due out in physical and digital media March 6th via Bersuk. The trio self-produced Strange Land—their somophore record—alongside engineer, Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Sparklehorse), as Consequence of Sound reports:

Yellow Ostrich’s sophomore LP, entitled Strange Land, will use this roster to emerge from the bedroom with a more fully-formed, enriched sound. In a press release, Schaaf claims, ”The Mistress was a guy in a bedroom. Strange Land is a band. In a slightly bigger room.” The album will also feature the engineering expertise of Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Sparklehorse).

Already known for layered, buzzing guitars and pure noise Yellow Ostrich begins their first nationwide tour as headliners in March, hitting all the major cities. Until they make their stop in a dive bar near you, snatch a free mp3 of their new single of Strange Land, Marathon Runner on their website or dive into some nostalgia tracks off their bandcamp (including one of my personal favorites) “Morgan Freeman’s Alleged Relationship With His Step-Granddaughter” from The Morgan Freeman EP. Well, yeah…don’t ask.

Interview: Calaca Strides

Soundcloud / Bandcamp / Twitter

For our readers who haven’t heard of Calaca Strides, can you tell us a little about the band?

I spent a few years as a touring musician playing guitar and keyboards for other bands. It was pretty cool, I got to play all over the UK and at a couple of festivals including Glastonbury and the Secret Garden Party (a personal favourite). That came to an end with the demise of the band so I took the opportunity to finally get my own ideas recorded. Calaca Strides is actually just one person and everything is recorded and mixed in a little home studio. Pure self indulgence.

You only have three words to describe your music, what are they?

Acidic Dark Folk

Who or what are some of your greatest inspirations: musically and otherwise?

My all time biggest influence is Kelly Joe Phelps, I wish I had a tenth of his skill on guitar and story telling in his songs. River Rat Jimmy was the first song I heard by him and it had me hooked instantly. Other than that I try to immerse myself in authors like Craig Clevenger, Chuck Palahniuk and Douglas Coupland.

Where’s your go-to spot for music-making or song-writing?

All I need to write music is a quite space and my guitar. Lyrics tend to take a bit more time to tease out so I am the typical muso and always carry a note book to scribble ideas into which I then sit down and flesh out properly later on.

We love our music with a pinch of darkness and your new release, Quiet Haunt, can certainly be described as haunting. Tell me about the process of making this EP.

Musically speaking I had hours of ideas rattling around so I was spoilt for choice. I prefer darker music, especially in the acoustic/folk world. Twee folk with tales of skipping through forests, majestic animals and bunting just makes me want to kick it between the legs with a steel toe capped boot. The name I chose for the project also helped to direct things. “Calaca Strides” was inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead festival and by the artwork of José Guadalupe Posada (an illustrator from the 1900s whose artwork became associated with the festival).

The cover art for Quiet Haunt is great, was this self-made? How do you feel this represents the EP as a whole?

The artwork was done by a very good friend of mine, Neil Warburton (www.iamunknown.com). I just asked him to come up with a sugar skull design and he produced some fantastic artwork which sits with the music brilliantly.

Our favorite track off the EP has to be Smile and Strike, can you take us through any importance behind this song?

It’s a song about self deprecation observed in myself and others I know and how debilitating a loss of confidence can be.

What are you currently listening to?

Other Lives, Kurt Vile, Low, War on Drugs and Wye Oak

Song-a-day: The Black Atlantic – An Archer, A Dancer

About two years ago, I stumbled upon The Black Atlantic‘s debut album, Reverence for Fallen Trees, and fell into a deep, stalker-like love with these Dutch dreamboats. Ok, maybe not that stalkerish, but still. Fast forward to January 13th of this year and they’re finally indulging me with some new awesomeness. Their new EP, “Darkling, I Listen,” hit the interwebs in all its five track glory. There’s something to be said about the band’s ability to transcend whimsy (Dutch people playing ukeleles. awesome) and a pinch of darkness in their inspiration; tracks off Reverence for Fallen Trees paid subtle tribute to the singer’s three grandparents who passed away during the recording process.

I recommend you start with An Archer, A Dancer off their new EP, as it’s one of the tracks that has stuck out most to me. A little Beach Boys, a little Bon Iver and whole lotta Dutch goodness.

Atlas Sound Announce New Tour

It was only a matter of time that Atlas Sound hit the road in honor of their recent release, Parallax. After hearing this full length release on vinyl, I’m looking forward to hearing Bradford Cox’s live set. After a quick stop in Tokyo, the band will tour across North America in a month.

Socal residents: keep February 24th free on your calendars, to see Atlas Sound play live at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. and listen to my favorite Atlas Sound track, streaming here.

Catch Nada Surf at a live set amongst Amoeba’s treasure troves of musical delight. And you guessed it, it’s all free. Although you’ll undoubtedly spend more on that shiny new vinyl you just had to have than you would have on a ticket, this night will remedy your case of the Mondays.

Check out Nada Surf’s website and download their new single (also fo’ free!), “When I Was Young.” Can’t make it out on Monday? They’ll be back in March at The Music Box with An Horse…and until then, just keep their their bangin new album on repeat.
