Song-a-day: The Black Atlantic – An Archer, A Dancer

About two years ago, I stumbled upon The Black Atlantic‘s debut album, Reverence for Fallen Trees, and fell into a deep, stalker-like love with these Dutch dreamboats. Ok, maybe not that stalkerish, but still. Fast forward to January 13th of this year and they’re finally indulging me with some new awesomeness. Their new EP, “Darkling, I Listen,” hit the interwebs in all its five track glory. There’s something to be said about the band’s ability to transcend whimsy (Dutch people playing ukeleles. awesome) and a pinch of darkness in their inspiration; tracks off Reverence for Fallen Trees paid subtle tribute to the singer’s three grandparents who passed away during the recording process.

I recommend you start with An Archer, A Dancer off their new EP, as it’s one of the tracks that has stuck out most to me. A little Beach Boys, a little Bon Iver and whole lotta Dutch goodness.

Atlas Sound Announce New Tour

It was only a matter of time that Atlas Sound hit the road in honor of their recent release, Parallax. After hearing this full length release on vinyl, I’m looking forward to hearing Bradford Cox’s live set. After a quick stop in Tokyo, the band will tour across North America in a month.

Catch Nada Surf at a live set amongst Amoeba’s treasure troves of musical delight. And you guessed it, it’s all free. Although you’ll undoubtedly spend more on that shiny new vinyl you just had to have than you would have on a ticket, this night will remedy your case of the Mondays.

Straight up, fan videos are usually pretty awful. Which makes this one, set to the music of “Desert Song” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros look especially awesome, all things considered. It’s like if Human Planet‘s earthy hippiness was showcased not only in stunning visuals..but also music from a bunch of hippies. And we are not complaining. For maxed out mind-blowing, watch it in 720p. We just dare ya. and keep an eye on the band’s new tumblr, they’ve got some perdy cool content up right now: concert poster designs, intimate videos, etc.

New Single: The Drums “Money”

Check out this new single from the The Drums off their forthcoming album, Portamento, available September 12th via Downtown Records (the same blokes who represent artists from Cindy Lauper–riiight–to Eagles of Death Metal and Femi Kuti). I don’t know why it took the music world this long to come up with a more honest love-inspired rock ballad. As their new single bravely reiterates over and over, “I want to buy you something, but I don’t have any money.” Daayum.

If you’re planning on hitting up the Windy City for Lollapalooza in August, expect to see a live rendition of this song that will remind you of the good ol’ days…when you…didn’t have money?

Song-A-Day: Ducktails “In the Swing”

Ducktails – In the Swing. First of all, who can’t appreciate this little reminder of a great show many of us remember, DuckTales. Already winning points there, m’boy. And although man might consider “In the Swing,” just a brief intro into Ducktails’ recent album Ducktails III – Arcade Dynamics, but I find this piece to be one of my favorites. “In the Swing,” is built around a simple but catchy central hook, and shrouded in just enough fuzz to fill out the mix; providing an excellent example of how these songs inevitably sound like what they are—a boy in his room mixing music from a laptop.

Musical imagery surrounds the listener–as if we were drifting on a sustained bed of haphazard vocal styling and droning percussion beat, bobbing aimlessly to the slow-motion underwater rhythms. Instead of vocals on this introductory piece, Ducktails utilizes a string of synth beats that offer melodic texture as well as subtle tambourine accompaniment. The form of the song is hypnotic, harkening very little change, as it was made to feel like a giant looping beat, free of sections and transitions. The tambourine and percussion against the synth lines interact cohesively to achieve this texture and aesthetic, working in close tandem.

Ford & Lopatin. Their recently changed moniker (before known as Games) has allowed the duo to embrace their unique mash-up of space-age, part 80′s synth throwback. Keep a lookout for their They’re releasing a debut album Channel Pressure in a matter of days, so keep your ears tuned on June 7th.

Telepathe. And you thought the Brooklyn duo act had already opened the show. Telepathe is an electro-pop girl group from Brooklyn who have toured alongside the likes of the Faint, Diplo and Julian Casablancas.

6:30 pm: Discussion with Dr. Luis Chiappe (lead curator of the Dinosaur Hall which opens July 16, is a longtime advocate of the dinosaur-bird link.)

In this lecture, he’ll examine the evidence in support of the idea that birds are the living descendants of meat eating dinosaurs, and therefore, that dinosaurs are not extinct.

8:00 – 10:00 pm: Live performances by Gayngs and Dirty Beaches

What started out as a collaboration between Ryan Olson and Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt has spiraled into GAYNGS, a musical project of epic proportions, enlisting the talents of over 25 musicians from across the country. Incorporating the talents of members of Megafaun, Bon Iver, Rhymesayers and more, the group has perfected its refreshing, modern sound and haunting, airy vocals.

Dirty Beaches is Alex Zhang Hungtai, born in Taiwan and a Canadian immigrant. He blends ’50s rock and roll with a cinema-like soundscape inspired by movie directors such as David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino.

5:30 – 10:00 pm: Resident KCRW DJ’s Anthony Valadez and Dan Wilcox spinning live in the African Mammal Hall.

Song-A-Day: Young the Giant “Garands”

Saw these guys (a while back) open up for Best Coast (along with Dominant Legs, who brought a decent set), and they stole the show from our dear friend Bethany. Who, by the way, is working on quite the intriguing project in the near future. But I digress. Young the Giant. They are the perfect band for taking a break from the lo-fi and dream-pop, etc. etc that clutters my ipod’s poor innards. Their catchy hits (read: nearing dangerously on rock ballad) feature main vocals more masterful than Robert Pattinson’s Twilight hair-do. The dude can actually sing and yes, that comparison was relevant. Their debut, self-titled release hit physical stores this past April, but they have the (rare) talent of sounding even better live.

Garands happened to be one of my favorites off the album and, awesomely enough, one of the best songs during their set. The live performance allowed for a couple well-placed guitar solos and just a hint of distortion.

If you’re making your way down to San Diego at all this summer, check these dudes out at the after-hours concert series at the San Diego County Fair. Their hitting the Ford Dealers Paddock Stage on June 21st. Concert free with fair admission.
